Born
in 1979 at Kolkata, Simrin Mehra Agarwal did her schooling in the city of
her birth and her studies in art both BFA and MFA in Painting from the
College of Art in Delhi and a diploma in Photography from Triveni Kala
Sangam also in Delhi. She has also been a Visiting Lecturer at the art
college where she studied.
Much of Simrin’s work engages itself with the concept of urban anonymity,
which is also the spring for her current series. Capturing the
claustrophobia of the ever-changing and fast-moving city life a whole new
imagery appears on her canvases. Her work makes reflections of the
mindscapes intermingled with city-scapes in a mix of the public and
personal. A versatile artist and a keen learner Simrin has experimented with
digital and video art, learnt scroll, banner and mural painting, printmaking
and photography some of which she uses for planning her layout and as
reference points. Her repertoire includes paintings and some print making
and her palette tends to be subtle and in varied colours though she also
makes some work in black and white.
A recipient of the French Government scholarship that will take her on an
Indo- French Artist Residency Programme, Simrin is a Gold Medalist, winner
of Sailoz Award, Nokia Arts Award for Asia Pacific 2000 amongst others. She
has participated in several national and international exhibitions,
workshops, residencies and artist camps including those at the Tate-Modern
in London, at INSA Art Centre in Seoul and the World Trade Centre at
Jakarta. She has been a part of some important group shows in Delhi, Kolkata
and Mumbai.
