Born in 1979, Mumbai, Rachana Nagarkar has studied at the Raheja School of Art. Rachana's work explores human states through layering & fragmented coalition. Her paintings are inspired by the city and her subjects are drawn from urban culture. Art, according to Rachana's perspective, is a confluence of what you see and what you feel. She says, “What a city speaks to us can never be seen through naked eyes but should be sensed.”

The core subject that she represents through her work of art comprises socio-political environment and its influence on people in general. Her work tries to explore the relationship between painting, politics and the emerging civilization trends. On the whole, her work focuses on the everyday issues having a realistic human connotation.
Her interest in media has extended beyond paintings to sculptures, video installations and photography. Rachana’s explorations indulge in the idea of man in cyber space and the effects of technology on mankind. With this creative motivation her effort is to find a unique artistic expression in keeping with the present era. Her works are a search for that expression.

Rachana’s solo shows include, in 2007, ‘Body forth’ at Kitab Mahal, Mumbai, in 2006,        ‘crossmopolitan’, video installation at Nehru Center, Mumbai. Amongst her recent international participations are, in 2008, ENGENDERED, A South asian  multidisplinary arts, curated by Chitra Prasad Patel ,Lincoln Center, New York; 2008, MIART art fair, works presented by AR Contemporary gallery, Milan. She has also been a part of residencies and several group shows.

Rachana Nagarkar  presently lives and works in Baroda.
